north east and south
east corners of Leigh

Pair of gatepiers, with gates and link walling. The north east gateway probably
C18, the south east a copy dated 1921. Ham stone ashlar pillars, with Portland
stone dressings to north east piers; wrought-iron gates to south east piers only.
North east piers square on plan, with moulded plinth, rusticated joints and cornice
caps; having steps, necks and ball finials; to inner faces are a pair of attached
Ionic columns in Portland stone; south east gateway similar, but omitting a small
band of dentilling in the cap moulding; wrought-iron gates in centre, highly
decorated and featuring the initials 'DFG' and '1921' in panels; matching flanking
railings on side walls: both gateways linked to Leigh House (qv) with short lengths
of rubble walling with thin ashlar copings, about 2.5 metres high with upsweeps
against house; the whole adding to the setting of the house.
