Description

ST4412 MERRIOTT CP CHURCH STREET (South side)

9/118 Highway Cottage

GV II

Semi-detached cottage. Circa 1600 origins, modified. Local stone rubble, colourwashed; thatched roof with stepped coped
south gable, half-hipped to north: central brick chimney stack. Two storeys, 2 bays irregular fenestration. Small
casement windows, 3-light ground floor, with keystoned lintol bay 1 and timber lintol bay 2. 2-light first floor
cutting into thatch. Between bays a C19 door in plain opening protected by rustic timber and hipped thatched porch.
Some exposed timbers alongside upper windows. Further small casement window in west gable. Interior not seen, but
reported is a 3-room cross-passage plan: main fireplace in the hall; timber-framed chimney; collar trusses, some frame
filling. (VAG Report, unpublished SRO, 1977). Attached to north west corner, and set at right angles, a C19 cottage,
apparently now incorporated to form one house.
