Listing Text

(also known as Glen House)

Large country house. Late Cl9, in C16 style, by Sir George Gilbert Scott, architect, for William Cuff. Ham stone ashlar
and near ashlar; Welsh slate roots between moulded coped gables, some having crocketted finials; octagonal ashlar
chimney stacks arranged in groups, having moulded plinths and caps. Complex plan: 2 storeys with attics, 6-bay south
elevation. Low battlemented parapet; hollow-chamfer mullioned windows, some with transoms and cinquefoil traceried
lights. Bay 1 has 2-light windows; bay 2 is an octagonal-plan projection with single light to the 3 main faces; bay 3
is gabled, with 3-light windows; bay 4 recessed with 2-light windows. Bay 5 is a 3-storey tower, with single-light
windows at upper level and angled projection at lower level, the battlemented parapet having a corbel table and a small
pediment over a shield plaque between the centre merlins on the south side. Bay 6 is a taller gable with an attic
window, crowned with an animal figure holding a weathervane. Entrance on north side. A romantic composition, but
substantially covered with creeper (June 1986) which obscures much of the detail of an important late C19 house.(VCH
Somerset, Vol IV, 1978, p53).
