Description

ST52SE WEST CAMEL CP PARSONAGE ROAD (East side, off)

4/151 Church Path Cottage and Dovecote

-

GV II

Cottage with integral dovecote. C15 origins but mostly C18 and later.
Local stone roughly coursed; plain clay tiles between coped gables;
brick end chimney stacks. 2-storeys, 3-bays of C20 fenestration. On rear
wall a C15 doorway with plain chamfered segmental pointed arch,
surrounded by apparently old stonework. Interior much altered in late
C20, but thick West gable wall still contains ovens, etc. Built onto
West gable, in matching construction, a substantial C18 dovecote. Of
full height, with ball finial to coping; a timber window half-way up the
West wall, and above 10 triangular openings for birds arranged in a
pyramid of 4, 3, 2, 1. Accommodation for approximately 350 birds: an
unusual survival, which may have links with the large Rectory dovecote
(qv) just across the road.
