GV II

Dovecote. C18 or earlier. Local lias stone cut and squared; Welsh slate over stone slate base courses between coped
gables with gabletted finials; brick chimney stack. 2 storeys, single bay. Plain doors in north wall below and in east
wall approached by flight of stone steps, above. Undercroft said to have housed former ovens (not seen); upper floor is
dovecote, with accommodation for about 500 nests within the four walls; two close double-collar roof trusses flanking
the former aperture for the birds, now blocked. Square plan unusual for dovecote in this part of Somerset: important
being in conjunction with Charlton House (qv). (Victoria County History, Volume III, 1974).
