Description

ST42NE SOMERTON CP

4/125 The Grange

17.4.59

- II

Detached house. Mid C19. Local lias stone ashlar with Ham stone dressings; clay pantiles between stepped coped gables;
ashlar stone chimney stacks. Complex plan. Two storeys; 6-bay north elevation, of which bay 1 projects for 2 bays, and
bay 4 is a projecting 2-storey porch. Large casement windows with horizontal glazing bars, all 2-light, under plain
stone lintols; bay 4 more ornate, with plinth, string and band courses; open semi-circular archway to inner part-glazed
door, and above a 6-pane sash window in architraved surround, with matching plain sash windows in return. Three-gabled
elevation to south, with matching detail: one rainwater stackhead dated 1863, but this may represent an extension.
Inside house, two chamfered ceiling beams, one with stepped runouts, some C18 doorcases, and two adapted pilasters to
stair lobby arch suggest the incorporation of earlier fragments, possibly from same site: throughout the detailing is
not consistent. Many C19 fittings and furniture items survive in servant's wing. Outbuildings attached, little altered
but of no special interest. Now part of Millfield School.
