6/245 Estate Farmhouse and front
Detached farmhouse. Dated 1694, but partly rebuilt after a fire. Local lias stone cut and squared; thatched roof
between stepped coped gables; brick end chimney stacks. Two storeys with attic; 3 wide bays, of which bay 3, half the
total width, appears to be C19. Timber casement windows; to bays 1 and 2 ovolo mould frames with plain lights, all
4-light, the lower pair sharing a label, the upper pair having separate timber lintols; bay 3 has 3-light casements set
under voussoired slightly segmental arches; between bays 2 and 3 a 6-flush panel door set in lined recess. Small pane
casement and a blocked ground floor window in north gable; in south gable a timber framed attic window. Date plaque
bearing name John Pyne between upper bays 1 and 2 windows. Interior not seen, but house said to retain cross-passage
plan. Extending across front of house, and connected to it by one-metre high coped stone walls, a cast-iron fence,
having hexagonal posts with pyramid finials, horizontal rod rails and double-curved braces with vertical middle-braces
carrying spearheads; gate to match opposite house door - probably early C20, but adds to setting of farmhouse. (VCH,
vol III, 1974).
