Description

ST4917 MONTACUTE CP BISHOPSTON (East side)
7/98 Monks House
(formerly listed as The Gables)
19.4.61
GV II
Detached house, possibly 2 cottages formerly. C15 origins, C18, extensively remodelled 1972. Ham stone cut and squared,
ashlar dressings; thatched roof between coped gables, the east gable having an obelisk finial; stone slab chimney
stacks. Single-storey with attics, 6 bays. Earliest windows bays 1, 4 and 6, being plain beaded-mullioned windows in
architraves, under hood moulds, of 4, 3 and 4 lights respectively: bays 2 and 3 have cruciform windows with
hollow-chamfer mouldings in wave mould recesses without labels; this type repeated in coped dormer windows upper bays 2
and 6, the former having two units divided by a king mullion, the copings having crocketted finials, all probably early
C20; the lower bay 2 window blocks a former doorway; surviving doorway in plain opening to bay 5. Lean-to at rear, with
C18 leaded casement window in west gable. Property unoccupied at time of inspection (September 1985), but noted were
two fireplaces, a large open one in the west gable with timber lintol, and a moulded stone surround to the hall
fireplace, possibly a reuse; reported are smoke-blackened beams indicating that the core represents a 2-bay hall with
jointed cruck frame, trenched purlins and 2 surviving windbraces; to the rear ground floor mutilated remains of two
windows with trefoil- cusped lights. (VAG Report, SRO Unpublished, September 1972).
