West Coker House
House. Various C18 and C19 builds. Ham stone ashlar and carved work; Welsh slate
roof with stone slate base course, main roof hipped with projecting coped gables,
some parapets; stone chimney stacks. Two-storeys with attic, 7-bays irregular main
facade. Bays -1 to -3 represent an early C19 portion, with plain sash windows with
single dividing bars bays -1 and -2, to bay -3 an oval window to ground floor above
which is a margined staircase window: bay-4 is the first part of the main block, but
seemingly a late C19 addition, with ornamental angled bay window, with plain sashes,
and attic window in gable over: bay-5 has margined sashes each level and C20 flat
roofed dormer: bay-6, also late C19, projects and has a quasi-shell hood to doorway
with two flanking sashes, early art noveau style; above two plain sashes in raised
surrounds flanking a coat of arms, then swept string course to decorated attic
window: bay-7 probably a C18 fragment, with plain sash below + 12-pane sash above,
with eaves cornice. Single storey bay in projection to East, and a possibly
refronted C18 outbuilding to West, now offices. Has ownership links with Almshouses
(qv) and Cross House (qv): in late C19 was a private school.
