Detached house. Dated 1653, amended early C18; built for Hugh Brome. Ham stone cut and squared, ashlar dressings;
triple-angle clay tiled roof between coped gables; brick and stone slab chimney stacks. Two storeys with attic, 4 bays.
Hollow-chamfered mullioned windows in chamfered recesses with individual labels, 3-light above and 4-light below,
rectangular-leaded in C20 casement inserts; small triangular arched stairlight to right of bay 4; to lower bay 3 a
projecting porch with ovolo-mould cambered-arched doorway under square label, above which in a coped gable crowned with
a cube and ball finial sundial, is a plaque with ovolo mould frame, oculus window to west side, inner door of wide
boards in heavy wave-mould frame, under timber lintol. Through passage plan, with outshut and small single storey
extension to rear: some overlap plank partitions and also wattle and daub on timber frame; a number of C17 2-panelled
doors as well as some early C18 bolection mould 2-panel doors; large gable fireplaces, the east having large timber
beam with ornamental plasterwork over, the west has a stone cambered arched fireplace with remains of a timber newel
stair in the cupboard alongside; chamfered ceiling beams, the west room having a 6-panel ceiling; C20 main staircase in
rear lean-to. On north-west corner an added room in outhouse, c1720-40, with fielded wall panelling, heavy timber
cornice and 2 arched recesses to either side of simple fireplace, similar to style of Nathaniel Ireson of Wincanton. On
first floor more C17 and C18 partition; stone fireplace in main west bedroom, which has early C18 wall safe with wood
door in south wall, and ornamental plaster frieze of vine pattern to perimeter and to cross beams. Roof of collar-beam
trusses, but roofspace not inspected.
