Description

DINNINGTON CP COOMBE ROAD (East side, off)
ST41SW Pondhayes Farmhouse

5/14

4.2.58 II

Detached farmhouse. c1800, possibly incorporating earlier work. Ham stone cut and squared, ashlar dressings; thatched
roof with coped south gable, plain north gable; one ashlar slab and 2 brick chimney stacks. Two storeys, 6 bays.
Hollow-chamfered mullioned windows with labels, of 3 lights to lower bays 1, 3, 4 and 5, and above are 3-light
casements, those to bays 2 and 5 rectangular-leaded; to lower bay 6 a C20 casement; to bays 2 and 4 segmental-arched
doorways with labels having 6-panelled doors in recesses. Top of south gable rendered; outshut to rear. Interior not
seen, but reported is a plan form suggesting this was formerly two properties, each with wide fireplace in north gable
and possibly with side ovens; in north end upper room an unglazed internally shuttered window, with others having been
on ground floor within living memory; roof frame of c1800. In 1819 this was the largest farm in the parish, but it had
been supplanted by 1851. (VAG Report, SRO unpublished, 1973; VCH, Vol III, 1974).
