8/57 Lopen Farmhouse, and front
Detached farmhouse. Possibly of C18 origins, modified in C19. Ham stone ashlar; Welsh slate roof to shallow pitch
between stepped coped gables; brick chimney stacks. Two storeys, 5 bays. Margined sash windows in plain openings, the
margins having etched glass; to lower bay 3 a later C19 2-panelled door under margined rectangular fanlight, protected
by an open stone porch with Tuscan columns and pilasters and plain entablature. Attached to east gable a former farm
building in coursed rubble stonework with thatched roof, having throughway at east end and blocked waggon doorway in
north wall; double collar- trussed roof, with inserted floor and remains of wattle and daub partitioning. Later Cl9
single-storey brick building, attached to rear of main house. Interior not seen. About 2 metres north of the house,
with curved returns to the corners, a low ashlar stone well capped with cast iron railings having decorative
spear-point tops; pair matching gates opposite doorway; the whole contributing to the setting of the house and the
streetscape generally. Throughout the C19 this was the largest farmstead in Lopen but it was divided up in 1918. (VCH,
Vol III, 1974).
