8/58 Lopen Mill House

Detached house, with possible former mill buildings integral. Circa 1800. Red brick in Flemish bond on stone plinth,
Ham stone dressings; roof partly covered with plain clay tiles over stone slate base courses between stepped coped
gables, and partly with double Roman clay tiles; brick chimney stacks. Two storeys, 3 bays, of which bay 3 is taller,
with the coped gables and chimneys. Bays 1 and 2 have beaded mullioned windows in recessed architraves below, of 2- and
3-lights, with similar-sized small-pane casement windows above, and C20 door and porch between: bay 3 has wide casement
windows in stone architraves at both levels, possibly double sash windows formerly, with to left a C20 door set in
stone architrave with flat stone hood on console brackets. Rear elevation similar, with a semi-circular arched window
to the stairwell. Interior not seen. Extending from the north-west corner westwards a 2-storey stone building with
slate roof, much altered and not of special interest. First recorded c1285, the mill was a water/grist mill until the
mid C18, whereafter it was jointly a grain mill and a linen establishment - part of the house may date from the
changeover - but all other mill buildings now demolished. (VCH, Vol III, 1974).
