10/206 Socket of Market Cross opposite
Egremont Hotel

Socket only from market cross. C13-14. Red sandstone. Square socket with broached corners, now with embedded concrete
shaft about 100 mm high. According to Pooley this market cross originally stood some 150 metres North at the junction
of Long Street and Fore Street but by the mid C19 had been reduced to the role of block stone, keeping the wheels of
carriages of the corners of a house occpied by a confectioner. Williton is unusual in having 2 market crosses as well
as a churchyard cross. Primarily listed for historic interest. (Pooley, Old Crosses of Somerset, 1877).
