Description

ST0740 WILLITON CP
ORCHARD WYNDHAM

10/242 Eastfield House

-

- II

House. Early C19, enlarged mid-late C19. Roughcast over rubble, exposed quoins, string course, hipped slate roof,
overhanging eaves, shaped brackets, lead sheeting to hipped wings, large rendered stacks on South East (kitchen wing).
U-plan facing North, entered on West front, service wings at rear linked by wall. West front; 2 storeys, 2:1 bays;
16-pane sash windows; with cambered heads left, blocked opening right in lower independently roofed service wing. 16
pane sash window left in flat roofed single storey canted bay, blind boxes, 12 pane sash right and in central almost
flat roofed porch, carved wooden cornice, entrance on right return, partially glazed door, early C19 inner half glazed
door with many glazing bars. The unbalanced design of the West front and evidence that the kitchen wing is a later
addition may indicate that building stopped suddenly and recommenced after some time lapse. It was been suggested that
this was the dower house to Orchard Wyndham (qv), in which case the death of the original intended occupant may have
brought the first phase of building to a premature conclusion.
