Four headstones to the Shurt
family set in stone surround, in
churchyard about 15 metres South
of porch, Church of St Mary

GV II

Group of 4 headstones set into a stone wall surround about one metre high. Late C17 and early C18. Blue lias monolithic
slabs set into blue lias random rubble wall. Inscribed with good lettering to member of the Shurt family, centre left
Julian, died 1690, centre right Hugh, died 1709, other inscriptions no longer legible. Most of the stone surround
obscured by ivy at time of survey (August 1983). The hurts were well-to-do clothiers, the leasees in the early C18 of
the Kilve Mills (qv), and others. (VCH Somerset, vol 5 forthcoming).
