Incorrectly shown on OS map as Steyning Farm. Manor House. Late C15 - early C16, enlarged early C17, altered lane C17,
and early - mid C19. Roughcast over blue lias rubble, gabled slate roofs with coped verges. C19 finials. Plan: early
manor house, 3 cell with stair turret fronted in double pile block with linking wings. One and a half storeys 1:1:1
bays; facade originally symmetrical, before addition of flat roofed single storey addition ground floor left, full
height gabled porch centre, all windows ovolo moulded, mullioned and transomed, under hood moulds, first floor 5-light
windows flanking 3-light in porch, ground floor 5-light flanking depressed 4 centred arch doorway with moulded jamb,
under hood mould, similar inner doorway. Gabled returns, symmetrical before early C20 addition of gabled watertower
right. Interior: exhuberant late C17 plasterwork to right of renewed cross passage, plaster overmantel C18 panelling
to left, ribbed ceiling, Jacobean dog leg stair with turned balusters and gate, some plasterwork decoration on first
floor, arched head doorways. Original manor house to rear has very large chamfered beams, large fireplace bay East end,
spiral stair in turret, Interesting both for the survival, relatively unaltered, of the earlier manor house and as an
early example of double pile renaissance house in Somerset. Plasterwork in hall bears similarities to the work at
Dunster Castle (qv). (VAG Report, unpublished SRO, January 1982)
