Description

SS 84 NE PORLOCK PORLOCK WEIR

3/88 Nos 1-5 (Consec)
Gibraltar Cottages

- II

Row of 5 cottages. Probably C17 with later modification, especially to windows.
Nos 1 and 2 are limewashed cob, the remainder are rubble, limewashed to front only;
thatched roofs. The row is of two or more builds, has a cross-gabled wing
projecting forward at the left end, and Nos 1 and 2 set at a slight angle to the
remainder. The backs of the property show the early origins, and include 3 large
external eaves stacks. Mainly 2 storeys, but 2 storeys with attic to Nos 4 and
5. Nos 1 and 2, 4-windowed, two at ground floor said to be C17 or C18 cross-
mullioned and leaded, others of C20; there is a door on the return elevation and
another under a flat hood on consoles centre on the 3 right-end windows. No 3
is 2-windowed, the upper ones to eyebrows and all later wood casements; plain
central door. No 4 has small attic window in 4 panes about 400mm deep, other
windows, 2 per floor are C20 steel casements. Two doors, one plain and one half
glazed. No 5 projects with half-hipped gable and is one-windowed with a 3-light
under two 2-light wood casements with glazing bars; to left a glazed door within
a C20 glazed porch. On the right return are pigeon openings. This cottage has
a central stone and brick stack. Nos 4 and 5 re-windowed to rear. A modest row,
maintaining considerable early fabric and dominant forms, especially at the back,
in an important townscape location.
