Range of buildings dating from road improvements of 1811 and generally similar to
Nos 1 to 8 opposite. 3 storeys and attics, painted ashlar, continuous cornice and
parapet ramped down at each change of level. Slate roofs. Generally 2 windows,
sashes in reveals with glazing bars. Moulded string over 1st floor, pilasters
between houses (No 19 has a central pilaster too).
No 19: only 1 sash window left, the rest are wide marginally glazed casements.
Fine 1920s tiled (or marble) butcher's shop-front with oval engaged Ionic columns,
modillion cornice and segmental panel in centre with projecting carved head of cow;
2 doors and 2 windows.
No 20: retains arched doorway to left with 6 panel (raised and fielded) door,
radiating fanlight and keystone. Good mid-C19 shop-front with ornate brackets to
fascia which has scalloped medallions and shaped panel, recessed central entrance
and flanking windows with curved glazing pattern. Built 1813-16 for Joseph Green
(Saddler).
No 22: 3 windows. Segment headed wide throughpassage. Oval rainwater head to
rear.
No 23: on ground floor, central doorway with side lights and palmette caps to
pilasters indicating fanlight in square overlight, reeded pilaster-strips to door.
Flanking ground floor windows have piers and fascia with cornice and inset angled
bays with central radiating glazing (all modern). Projecting early C20 porch on
turned columns, flanking steps, ornamental railings and trellis work below cornice.
No 24: left part is a complete house front with basement. Right-hand part projects
and has radiused corner. 5 sash windows in architraves, 2 blind on 1st floor.
Modern shop-front to left below band and original arched doorway with 6 panel
(raised and fielded) door and traceried fanlight. The ashlar is not painted. No
cornice.
