Late C17 altered late C19. Rubble walling with relieving arches over window
openings, stone tiled roof. End gables and 2 gables to front, coped verges, stone
chimneys. 2 casements with chamfered stone mullions. 3 + 1 bays, late C19 glazing
bar sashes. Left hand ground floor window 7 light bay with transomes, ogee heads
and parapet (late C19. Right hand bay has modern casements inserted in 1st floor
and paired plate glass sashes on ground floor. Good late C18 door in architrave
opening with cornice hood on brackets and fluted frieze; modern door with
rectangular fanlight of intersecting pattern including section in glazing for lamp.
Once the house of Frances Rowe, an C18 poet. Formerly the home of the Smith family
who sheltered the deposed priest of St John's Church (1662). Linked to right by
segmental arch with passage over to 2 storey 1 window gabled cottage with
bargeboards and plate-glass sashes dated 1898. (Rook Lane Cottage not of special
interest).
