Circa 1700 with later alterations. 2½ storeys and cellar. Coursed rubble with
worn freestone dressings. Moulded plinth. Coved and moulded cornice. Chamfered
quoins. Hipped pantile roof with 2 restored gabled and moulded dormers. 5 tall
glazing bar sashes in front (probably inserted in former cross-mullion windows) with
moulded cills, 3 on ground floor retain parts of cornice. Central bolection door-
way with carved scroll brackets over panelled pilasters, broken pediment framing
urn. Wide 6 panel door (upper 2 glazed) approached by 5 steps with railings and
iron handrail. Return to Whittox Lane has 3 windows (brick blocked), 2 cross
mullion type and 1 a halved cross mullion type (very narrow with transom)with cornices.
Rear has 3 light transomed window above 1st floor and 2 more halved cross mullion
Interior: excellent staircase, 2 long heavy turned balusters per tread, ramped heavy
moulded rail with panelled newels, raised panelled and ramped dado. Staircase may
be circa 1740. Panelled rooms on ground and 1st floors, west rooms have painted
scenes on panels over doors (3 in each), panelling blocks former windows to west
(probably also circa 1740), bolection fireplaces.
A very good town house.
