5/69 Former Toll Gate and Piers

Toll gate and piers. Probably C18, restored. Wooden 6-barred gate with 2 sets of diagonal strengthening struts. Top bar
with scrolled wrought- iron cresting. Bulky octagonal piers, that to left with wrought-iron capping incorporating hinge
which continues across the top of the gate, being attached to the cresting. Part of the Wells Turnpike Trust; the gate
was situated at Mead Toll House on the road between Glastonbury and Street. Metal plaque on South side giving
historical details. Included primarily for historical interest. (McGarvie M., Guide to Historic Street,
Unpublished). via door opening on "stair turret" returns, that to right with late
