House. Late C18/early C19. Rendered and colourwashed, moulded stone cornice,
parapet with coping, coped verges, brick stacks, double-Roman tile and slate
roof. Two storeys and attic, 3 bays, sash windows with glazing bars, late C19
canted bay on left of ground floor, tile roof, sash windows with glazing bars.
Central semi-circular head door opening, 6-panelled door, fanlight with
radiating glazing bars and central stained glass panel with achievement; stone
Doric portico with 2 fluted columns, triglyph frieze. Interior with coeval
doors, staircase, ornamental plasterwork, chimney pieces and fitted bookcases.
Home of William Stradling in early-mid C19; an antiquarian and collector, he
built the adjacent grotto (qv).
