(The Tower House)
Grotto. Early C19 by William Stradling. Rubble and tufa. Pair of small connected
vaulted chambers, the floors set slightly below ground level; earth banked up
around the chambers with retaining walls, forming an irregular oblong mound.
Roof of one chamber rises to a cylindrical rubble ventilator with narrow openings
in stone surrounds; 3 entrances with steps down. East chamber with romantic text
on a marble slab. To east end of mound a mock pagan altar formed of 4 large
stone slabs. Entrance to north across a causeway between 2 ponds, small rubble
bridge with rough-hewn abutments.
