2/60 . The Old Rectory
House. Dated 1742, enlarged early C19, probibly the rebuilding of in earlier dwelling. Rendered, slate roof, external stack left with large early C19 brick chimneys, and to right main block with service wing to right. 2-storeys plus
attic, 5-bays; sash windows, 3 gabled dormers, central bay distinguished by giant pilasters, french windows first floor opening onto C18 wooden decorative porch with Chinese Chippendale style balcony, glazed double doors below. Left return
elevation of 2-bays with projecting splayed bay window with glizing bar sashes and service wing beyond, probably part of the C19 additions. Gable end has plaque with date 1742 and inscription referring to rebuildinq in that year. Interior not viewed. This was the home of the wit and raconteur, Sidney Smith, Vicar of Combe Florey 1829-1845.
