Cottage, now divided. C16, enlarged and embellished circa 1675, modernized
C20. Rendered over random rubble, thatched roof, stacks West and South
gable ends, and to East of cross passage. Large stepped external stack on
East front. L-shaped plan, 3 cell and cross passage East-west with addition
to South-east. East elevation, 2 storey, 1 bay gable end with 1 and half
storey, single bay wing to South, C20 2-light casement with glazing bars
and imported C19 2 panel studded door in gable end.
Interior: Reused moulded ceiling beam and fragment of plaster frieze in
South wing, the inner hall has 4 panelled, plain chamfered framed ceiling,
cut in South corner where staircase bay originally flanked the entrance
for the cross passage, now blocked. Incomplete plaster frieze of mermen(?)
and pomegranates (?) with spice cupboard to North of open hearth inscribed
RYI 1673. Upstairs the main bedroom, now divided contains good, large
plaster overmantel with the arms of the Butchers Guild flanked by
surpointers and on lower edge inscribed RY 1674 IY. The West end of the
cottage reputedly contains a shallow peak headed wooden door frame,
entrance to cross passage, inscribed RIY 1672, with similar inside RY 1673,
also a gabled fireplace with a bacon curing chamber beside it, now blocked.
RY stands for Robert Yen, a retired butcher from Exeter, and I for Isabelle
his wife.
