Description

ST32NE STOKE ST GREGORY CP SLOUGH LANE (South side)

4/61 Churley Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Possibly Cl6 enlarged C17, refronted in brick C19, south gable end and south-east part of facade rebuilt,
late C19 bay windows inserted. Red brick, English bond, squared and coursed lias plinth, plain clay tile roof with
brick stacks either ends to 2 bays left, steeper pitch concrete tile roof right with coped verges gable end and central
large brick stack. Set gable end onto road facing east, possible open hall house, ceiled to 3-cell and cross passage,
another room added beyond kitchen at north end, continuous outshot at rear, conservatory south gable end. Two storeys,
3:1 bays, first floor 3 and 4-light window with segmental head and keystone right of entrance, square bay with dentil
cornice and glazed double doors with marginal glazing bars and side lights, Ham stone ashlar doorcase to entrance with
console brackets and 6-panel door. Right return, higher lias plinth, 4-light segmental headed window with keystone in
gable end, C20 4-light window below and 3-light in outshot. Interior; stairs inserted beside former stack to left of
through passage, C19 grate to hall with 6-panel steeply chamfered compartment ceiling, similar in inner room with
partition between giving impression that originally one room. The front wall and gable end wall appear to have been
rebuilt beyond original wall line as compartment ceiling does not rest on wall. Kitchen to right of through passage
with bressumer behind C19 lintel, cupboard with C18 panelling in rear wall and deep recesses on either side of
fireplace, right hand one giving access to north gable end room, also with chamfered beam. Collar beam roof; various
changes of level on upper floor and statement by present owner that earlier roof trusses survive within roof space. The
front wall at the south east end is splayed out and the compartment ceiling beams above grate in hall are detaching
themselves from the ceiling. A most interesting farmhouse that merits a more detailed survey.
