West of Somerford Hall


Range of courtyard buildings associated with Somerford Hall (q.v.
ref. 5/100) comprising stable with grooms' quarters and tack room
(N), cottage (unoccupied at time of inspection, July 1991) and
storage block forming E and W sides of yard, dovecote to SE and
additional stable/storage range to S. Late C18/early C19. All
brick with stone dressings; tiled roofs. The stable frontage (N)
designed to complement the hall: central symmetrical 2:7:2 bay
2-storeyed range (the.left (E) element windows, flanked by single
storeyed workshops). Central block,'the outer bays pedimented and
slightly projecting', the pediments framing clocks. 'Continuous
moulded cornice and stone plinth. Windows under wedge lintels,
some with sashes; some blocked. Central doorway with plain
surround. Side bays each contained 2 segmentally-leaded arched
doorways, one only retaining original panelled double doors, the
other blocked. Single-storeyed ranges with similar details to
main elevation contained workshops, tack rooms etc. Minor
fittings survive internally. Connecting ranges to rear simply
treated, the cottage with irregular fenestration. Wagon entrances
to both. Dovecote, square on plan, with pyramidal roof surmounted
by octagonal leaded cupola. No openings otherwise except doorway
to E. Timber resting boxes all removed. S range with some
original features including cast-iron small-paned window,
diagonally planked doors and king-post roof. Buildings included
primarily for group value with Somerford Hall.
