Granary and Stables. Probably C18, but of markedly late C19 appearance.
Red brick with sandstone ashlar plinth and dressings, graded Westmorland
slate roofs. 'U' plan with yard to rear and 2 threshing floors to main
range. Large scale and Palladian in conception. North Front: Corner
pavilions and 3 storey main range; 1-1: threshing bay: 4 : threshing bay:
1-1 bays. The corner pavilions have tall attics to ridge height,
articulated by blind lunettes and oculi to outer faces above a bold
moulded cornice, and also corbelled dove landing ledges and entry holes
at eaves; pyramidal hipped roofs with weathervanes. The main range to
centre has 2 lower symmetrically placed open pedimented breaks with
arched entries to threshing floors, ashlar band at first floor cill level,
returned as impost to entries; 2 light windows, reduced proportions to
each floor and only 1:2:1 on second floor; dentilled eaves course below
moulded stone cornice, extended from cornice of pavilions; 3 louvred
hipped granary dormers to attic. The return wings are the same height
and approximately 4 bays deep. These commanding buildings are prominent
and excellently proportioned. There is a possibility that they were
designed for threshing machines with part of the upper floors used as a
maltings with dovecotes to the upper parts of the pavilions.
