GV II

Former stables and gate pier. Probably C17 incorporating earlier materials;
considerable C18 alterations. Red brick outer walls and timber framed
core; plain tile roof. 5 bay range aligned north-east/south-west facing
south-east. One storey and loft. 5 segmental-headed doors; large
2-leaf door to the right. Small segmental headed ground floor windows.
2 boarded loft openings to the left. Central gabled loft door. Stone
mullioned windows to the rear. Attached gate pier to the south-west
of square section with pyramidal cap, which flanks one side of a blocked
entrance to the outer courtyard at Hamstall Hall (q.v.). Interior.
Timber framed cross walls and some close studded framing to the rear.
Cambered tie beams and v-struts above the collars, 2 pairs of purlins
and ridge piece; some curved wind braces. Much of this timber is re-
used and is probably C16. In the south-west is a reused C15 aisle
post with double ogee mouldings which probably come from a new demolished
section of Hamstall Hall (q.v.).
