Description

1.
5369 YOXALL LOWER HOAR CROSS ROAD
SK 12 SW 9/3 ---------------------
The Old Mill
II

2.
A disused corn mill. County records refer to a mill on this site in 1341 but the
present building is of probably late C16 origin, with later alterations. L-shaped
plan, the main block incorporating the former mill house and the mill having a
projecting gabled bay on right hand side. Timber-framed and mainly later brick
infilling, the timber frame-exposed in upper storey of main block. Modern tile roof
with 2 gabled dormers to left. Plain gabled end to right with one later casement
window and plain doorway. Square-framed doorway to left with ledged stable-type
door. The interior has some exposed timber-framing including king post trusses and
framed partitions. Much of the original machinery remains including drive shaft and
gearing to 2 millstones. At the north-east corner of the building is housed an iron
overshot mill wheel with wooden buckets.
