12.3.64 The Almshouses
Almshouses. Dated 1712, restored 1892. Red brick, painted stone quoins
and dressings; tiled roof; end stacks and 2 ridge stacks. Single
storey and attic. 1:3:3:1 front; 6 hipped dormers over 2-light small-
pane casements, with raised painted keystones, slight central break open
pedimented, at eaves level and with coat-of-arms in cartouche inscribed
"THIS HOSPITAL WAS FOUNDED BY/WILL ROLLESTON ESQ. WHO GAVE/l00p ANNU
TO THIS TOWN FOREVER/6p APIECE YEARLY TO FIX POOR/PEOPLE AND THE RESIDUE
TO SEVERAL/OTHER PIOUS AND CHARITABLE USES 1712/DEO SIT GLORIA". Boarded
doors in 3 pairs to centre break and set inside outer windows. The roof
was raised in the otherwise sensitive restoration.
