Stables and entrance arch. Circa 1900. Red brick, rendered to entrance
arch; hipped slate roofs; twin and triple-shafted ridge stacks with
cornices. U-shaped plan around a cobbled courtyard open to the east but
part-screened by a rendered 'triumphal' entrance arch: a taller pedimented centre
arch with octagonal bellcote over and clock, is flanked by 2 pedestrian
arches, with projecting even quoins and surmounted by dentilled cornices
at the impost level of the main arch; all the arches have raised keystones
and the centre has a coffered intrados; short screens of spearhead cast
iron railings (and pedestrian gates) set on dwarf walls connect the entrance
to the stables. This 2-storey block has light (possibly not intended)
colour banding and cogged eaves; the sides are of 9 bays with sashes to
the left and casements to the right wings; 5 segmental-headed coach entries
to the left and stables and offices to the right and centre; the right-
hand wing is finished to the east end with a pediment corbelled over the
eaves and substantial stack to the left and a single-storey addition below,
with a 3-sided bay part-encroaching on the entrance screen. Part of a
complete Edwardian mansion layout at The Lawns (q.v.), built for the Bass
family.
