4/19 Lower Stone House
Farmhouse. Late C16 or early C17 with mid-C19 alterations and exten-
sions. Large coursed dressed and squared stone blocks, tiled roof;
verge parapets to west only; end stack also to west. 2 storeys and
cellar, 3-window front; composition inset to right of 4-, 2- and 3-
light chamfer mullioned windows, the 4-light (probably formerly of 3)
with only one stone mullion remaining, the ground-floor windows are
all at different levels and all but the centre 2 lights are large C20
windows in enlarged openings; right-hand windows raised over 2- and
3-light mullioned cellar windows set at ground level; boarded entrance
to left end. Mid-C19 part timber framed bay addition to east end.
Massive stack to rear with 2 diagonal shafts. Interior: door opens
against heck of massive fireplace with fire window and salt niche to
fireback and chamfered firebeam; massive breast continued to first
floor. Spiral stairs to cellar which has heavy sandstone cheese
shelves; internal partitions in timber framing. Simple queen post
roof trusses with windbraces.
