(east side)
9/95 Wetley Abbey

GV II

Shown on OS map as Cellarhead Road.
Large house. Late 1820s or early 1830s with C20 alterations. Coursed
dressed and squared stone; low-pitch roof invisible behind parapets. 'Gothick'
style and part cruciform in plan, stacks all to rear. Tall 2-storey entrance
front of 6 windows in a 2:2:2 arrangement, plus a projecting pedimented
gable of 2 to right; (including a 2-storey, 3-sided bay window to right),
the larger part to left has thin set-back buttresses finished by crocketed
pinnacles to left end and to sides of central projection; windows to outer
2 bays are all labelled, 2-light mullioned and transomed of Tudor style;
the centre projection has 2 ogee-headed lancets with criss-cross glazing
bars over an elaborately ogee-labelled Tudor-arch doorway; criss-cross over-
light and double boarded doors; further entrance flanked by side lights
to right-hand set-back. There is no religious connection with the Abbey,
the name contrived purely for romance.
