10/210 Consall new lock
- at SK 004 484
Canal lock. Circa 1779 with early C19 alterations and circa 1981 lock
gates. Sandstone ashlar retaining walls, some replaced by concrete.
Lower side has retaining walls tapered down to left and cut short and
curved to right with winding stone steps rising from canal level to
the lock against the side of the wall; wooden-framed catwalk over
entrance. The Caldon Canal was built to carry limestone from Caldon
Low. Originally surveyed by James Brindley and succeeded by Henshaw
and John Rennie.
