Description

KINGSLEY C.P. BLACK LANE, Whiston
SK 04 NW
(south side)
10/270
- Barn approx. 2m
east of Stable
House Farmhouse

GV II

Barn (possibly also a workshop). Early to mid-C19 with C20 alteration.
Moulded copper-slag blocks with sandstone ashlar dressings; tiled roof;
verge parapets; small ridge stack to left of centre. 2-storey front
of four 2-light chamfered mullioned windows inset from right over 4
openings, all except centre door have been enlarged or inserted; part
of original 2-light window (as first floor) remains to right. Round-
arch entrance to right gable end over a flight of steps. Apart from
a small shed this group, consisting of house (q.v.) and 2 barns (q.v.)
is the only example in the locality made from such an unusual material.
The smelting site lay approximately 200m north of the group and was
possibly a model to promote a wider distribution of the blocks, which
was never achieved. It is also quite conceivable that the name of
the lane is derived from the extraordinary inky irridescence of the
construction.
