Description

SK 03 NW CHECKLEY C.P. HOLLINGTON ROAD (south side)

9/138 Stables and Coach House
approximately 100m north
of Heath House

GV II

Stable and coach house. C18 remnants to an early C19 reconstruction.
Red brick; hipped, tiled roof on dentilled eaves course; ridge stacks
(to each range). U-shaped plan open to south. Inner Court: cast iron
small-pane casements with segmental heads, partially replaced on 6-window
east range but complete to the west of four; segmental headed carriage
doors, two on the east and west, the latter now blocked, three on the north
range, widely spaced to left and with a gablet, clock and cupola over the
right hand; on the extreme right set against the return angle is the taller
carriage driveway also with segmental head almost at eaves height. The
west face of the building retains C18 brickwork. Coincidentally the north
face of the building aligns perfectly with the course of the Roman Road,
clearly visible in crop marks at the time of resurvey (August 1985).
The building forms part of a complete country house complex.
