House. c1700 with later alterations and addition. Massive coursed
and squared sandstone blocks with herringbone tooling; plain tile
roof; brick integral end stack. End baffle-entry plan; aligned
east-west facing south with attached stable to the east on the
same alignment. House to left, former stable to right. House: 2
storeys and gable-lit attic; 2 windows, 3-light chamfer mullioned
windows to first floor, C20 casements to ground floor replacing
earlier mullioned windows; boarded door to left with strap
hinges. Former stable: now garage and house extension. 2 storeys;
roughly 3 bays, tall glazing bar casement to ground floor right,
C20 casement to first floor left, central garage doors. Interior:
chamfered spine beams with stops which indicate position of
former room partition; chamfered bresummer to an inglenook
containing a smaller stone fireplace with corbelled lintel. The
staircase formerly extended up north side of stack. 1st floor:
massive chimney breast of stepped ashlar blocks. Central roof
truss with exposed tie beam showing position of near-central
doorway (infilled); studs below infilled by wattle and daub
(concealed). Holme Cottage stands on a sandstone outcrop in which
steps have been cut which lead up to the front door; 3 carved
heads probably medieval which may have been brought from the site
of the Castle (q.v.) are embedded in the rock.

boarded door to left with strap hinges. Former stable: now garage
and house extension. 2 storeys; roughly 3 bays, tall glazing bar
casement to ground floor right, C20 casement to first floor left, central
garage doors. Interior: chamfered spine beam and chamfered bresummer
to an inglenook containing a smaller stone fireplace with corbelled
lintel; the staircase originally extended up the north side of the stack.
Holme Cottage stands on a sandstone outcrop in which steps have been cut
which lead up to the front door; 3 carved heads probably medieval which
may have been brought from the site of the Castle (q.v.) are embedded in
the rock.
