Description

TL 76 SW DALHAM DALHAM HALL

6/9 3 ranges of
garden walling
with linking
ha-ha, piers and
gates south of
Dalham Hall

II

Walling, piers and wrought iron gates. C18. A section of wall 3
metres high runs about 100 metres southwards from Dalham Hall and
is joined by a low ha-ha to a second parallel section 60 metres
long, which passes within 10 metres of the tower of St. Mary's
Church. This section returns eastwards for 50 metres, dividing
the churchyard from the grounds of Dalham Hall. Walling of red
brick in irregular Flemish Garden Wall bond with slightly
projecting piers at 5 metre intervals and moulded brick copings.
At the corners, large square piers rise about 1.2 metres above
the walling; moulded coping, and cup-and-ball finial on plinth,
all of limestone. Some piers have sunk oblong rendered panels.
120 metres south of Dalham Hall the wall is reduced in height to
become a ha-ha about 30 metres long with limestone coping. Set
into the wall north of the Church is a group of memorial stones
to members of the Affleck family. The wall is broken about 15
metres south of Dalham Hall for a pair of wrought iron gates with
side panels and brick piers.
