Description

TL 6463 NEWMARKET HIGH STREET
(including EXNING)

7/97 The Old Bank
House, at rear
of Nos 58 and 60
(Barclays Bank)

II

Store, formerly house. Mid C18. 2 storeys and attics, 5
windows. Red brick with string course at 1st floor. Plaintiled
roof with gable chimneys of red brick. Windows with segmental
arches of gauged brick; formerly with sash windows, most openings
reduced for C19 iron small-pane casements in moulded wooden
frames. C18 entrance door with 8 fielded panels, fanlight with
segmental head and vertical glazing bars, broad flat side panels.
The brickwork shows evidence for a former entablature or porch
with pilasters. A good and complete C18 staircase through 3
floors with newels having moulded caps and ball finials, moulded
handrails and turned balusters, and dado panelling at the wall.
The house was probably extensively panelled; this, with the
fireplaces and most of the doors, has been almost entirely
removed.
