Description

1. FRIARS STREET

1692
(South East Side)
No 17
TL 8741 3/50 3.3.52.

II* GV

2.
An interesting late C16 building (said to be earlier) with good detail
though with considerable exterior and interior alterations. Roof may
have been heightened in C18 or later. 2 storey timber-framed with plastered
panels, roofs tiled, the upper storey projects on the front. It has
curious and unusual supporting brackets the caved ornament is under-cut
and hangs clear of the back part of the bracket. There is a very large
rectangular chimney stack at the South end of the house, and the ground
floor room (now shop) has a very large open fireplace with heavy beam.
There is a fine old staircase, and said to be a wood ribbed ceiling and
original bay windows in the back wing of the house.

Nos 7 to 17 (odd) form a group.
