Thomas Gainsborough, landscape and portrait painter born here 1727. The
family came to the house in 1725. Probably C17 house with extensive C18
alterations. 2 storey, and attics and cellars, timber-framed and plastered,
roof tiled. There is a good front of red brick with panelled parapet, white
painted modillion cornice. 5 window range, sashes with glazing bars, flush
frames, and brick aprons. Central doorway has panelled reveals, flat white-
painted wood case, and rectangular fanlight. There is a plaque on the front
inscribed "In this house was born Thomas Gainsborough 1727". The back
elevation of the house has a large rounded turret at West end, storeys.
Upper windows, sash with glazing bars and ground floor with 3 Gothic French
windows. The house is now a museum. NMR photos.

Nos 9 to 15 (consec) and No 46 form a group.
Nos 41 to 47 (consec) and 1 and 2 Weaver's Lane form a group.
