This has the finest example of C15 detail in Sudbury. It was built circa
l450 but has C16, C17 and C18 additions and alterations. It is of 2
storeys, attics, and cellars, timber-framed and plastered, roofs tiled,
cross wings east and west. East cross wing probably Cl7 with upper storey
projecting on curved brackets. The centre part of present house has C18
features - mansard roof, semi-circular attic dormer with radial glazing
bars. Plaster cove cornice. There are modern ground floor windows in
this and C17 windows in the east wing to match the windows of the C15
wing. The C15 wing has the best features, the upper storey projects on
curved brackets with moulded capitals and shafts, the timber-framing is
exposed and the oriel window in the upper storey is particularly fine.
It has much original and delicate tracery. The soffit is carved with a
man and some grotesque animals. The ground floor doorway has a 4-centre
archway. The west side of this wing is now Victorian flintwork, but
originally half-timbered. (See engraving Gentleman's magazine August
