The name applies to a pleasantly arranged group of late C19 industrial
buildings comprising a range of mill buildings to the north-east of an
enclosed courtyard between Prentice Street and Bolton Street, and a range
of Maltings on the south-west and south-east sides.
The Mill consists of a 2 storey red brick wing at the north end rising
to 3 storeys with a projecting timber loft-hoist and a main block which
stands at right angles to the wing forming a satisfactory visual stop
to the comparatively narrow entrance from Prentice Street.
The frontage to Prentice Street is gabled, with a raised brick band
and corner pilaster treatment. One window range, double-hung sashes
with glazing bars.
The main block is designed in a style reminiscent of the Italian Romanesque.
Four window range on the north and south fronts (which are of similar
design) and 2 window range on the west front. Casements with glazing
bars set in chamfered reveals and with stone cills and shallow brick
apron courses. The ground and first storey windows have segmental and
the second storey windows have flat brick arches. The windows are arranged
in pairs set in recessed panels topped by a serrated brick dentil course
and with a grey brick decorative band between first and second storeys.
The gable is decorated by shaped brick pendants and has a central round
headed window with a moulded brick hood course at second storey level,
two grey brick decorative bands run between storeys. The facades are
framed by chamfered brick pilasters and a raised plinth.
A semi-circular brick arched doorway on the north front has a stone
tympanum inscribed "Built by J W and F W Baker" and a monogram. Roof
slate.
