MILDEN
Church of St Peter

23.1.58

I
A small flint and stone church with a Norman nave and C13 chancel. A
small open bell cote at the west end replaces a tower which was demolished
in 1840 after a storm has made it unsafe in 1827. The Church of St Peter,
Mellinga, is recorded in Domesday Book 1086. The south doorway is Norman
with chevron ornamentation and a medieval oak, studded door with iron
hinges. The north doorway is C14-C15. The south wall of the nave has
a Norman window and one of the C15. The roof has carved tie beams, one
with a crown post. The interior fittings include a C17 octagonal pulpit
and a Norman square font (plastered). There is a good wall monument
to James Alington d 1627. There are also some C17 pews. Graded for
its architectural and historical value.
