Description

BURY ROAD
1.
TL 980513
48/412 Barn c30m east of
Brickhouse Farmhouse
GV II
2.
Barn, probably C16 reusing C13 components, additions of C17 or C18. Timber
framed, weather boarded; some original wattle and daub at end walls. Asbestos
sheeted roof (formerly thatched), half hipped at both ends. 3 bays 2 aisles.
Gabled porch C17 or C18, to centre bay, north side. The building is of
particular interest for its major reuse of components from a late C13 barn of
larger dimensions. Included are 6 arcade posts, the arcade plates, sections of
eaves plate, one tie beam and a number of braces and studs. The original barn
was also aisled, with passing braces rising from the external walls, passing
through trenches in the aisle ties and arcade posts, and located at the tiebeams
by secret notched-lap joints. The arcade posts are unjowled. Scarf joints are
splayed and tabled with undersquinted butts and a key, of which one remains.
Braces are straight anbd square sectioned. The C16 work includes a
clasped-purlin roof and external walling with edge-halved and bridled scarfs.
