TM 0434 STRATFORD ST MARY LOWER STREET
The Swan Inn
Public house. later C16-C17 of 2-3 builds. Later alterations and additions
include C20 single storey extension of no special interest. Timber-framed, part
rendered and part rebuilt in red brick. Plain tile roof. Red brick stacks.
L-plan. 2 storeys with attic to front section of range standing gable to street.
This range is of 2 builds, the front bay apparently earlier with a 3½ bay addition
with lobby entry to rear. Gable end somewhat remodelled, slight jetty supported
on tile brackets, and mock framing above. C20 door to right and C20 mullion and
transom windows. 12-pane sashes and signboard on bracket to 1st floor. Plate
glass sash to attic. Steeply-pitched roof, ridge and rear gable external stacks.
Range to right rendered, 2 lower storeys with C20 mullion and transom window to
ground floor, 12-pane sash above. Rebuilt end ridge stack. Left return cross
range close studded throughout. Rear part stands on brick plinth and middle
rail is at higher level than front range. Lobby entry with C20 door. Casement
windows except 2 sashes with glazing bars to 1st floor. Interior: cross range,
front room has red brick basket-arched fireplace. Rebuilt inglenook to rear of
stack. Chamfered beam and exposed joists to rear room. Stairs to right of stack
have section of C18 balustrade with column on vase balusters, column newels and
moulded handrail. 1st floor: to rear of stack a painted chamfered basket-arched
fireplace with bar and step stop to jambs. Lozenge decoration above arch. Finely
cut and moulded jowl to post adjacent to stack. Wall plate with face-halved scarf.
To front of stack a restored red brick basket-arched fireplace. Chamfered beams,
run-out stops. Roof rear section 2 levels butt purlins and collars. Lower range
to right has ovolo moulded ceiling beams and joists to ground floor.
