House, now 2 dwellings. Early C16 cross wing to right (No 1) with C17 and later
alterations, C17 cross wing to left (No 2), centre range rebuilt C18 - C19. Timber-
framed cross wings, rendered, that to left partly underbuilt in brick. Centre range
red brick in Flemish bond. Plain tile roofs, French tiles to rear. 2 storeys, cellar
and attic. U-shaped plan with wings of 4-bays. Through passage adjacent to right
cross wing. Centre range: C19 door to right in architrave under flat gauged brick
arch. Small casement under soldier arch to centre and tripartite sash with glazing
bars under flat gauged brick arch to left. To 1st floor, 3 C20 cross casements.
To rear large external stack and gabled staircase extension to left. Right cross
wing: tripartite sash with glazing bars in architrave with 16-pane sash in architrave
above. Bargeboards to gable. Ridge stack. To right return a four-light window
with cavetto and ovolo mullions. Left cross wing external stack to front gable
end, entrance to left return. Interior: No 1, front room has C17 cross beam plaster
ceiling with paterae. To rear room a Tudor-arched doorway in studded partition
containing a studded board door with rear batons and strap hinges. Moulded Tudor-
arched bressumer to fireplace. Wall posts and studding exposed. C17 plaster cornice.
C19 staircase with ramped handrail. First floor: jowled posts and wall plates exposed.
Front room, to second bay a cambered tie beam with plaster paterae to centre and arched
braces. Jacobean strapwork frieze. Indications of large concealed fireplace, with
Tudor-arched door to right. Clasped purlin roof with some wind braces. Herringbone
brick nogging to front gable. No 2 shows timber frame with jowled posts, chamfered
tie beams and arch braces. One studded partition to 1st floor and wall studding.
Centre range has restored clasped purlin roof. The manor of Bourn Hall was granted
to Cardinal Wolsey in 1528 on the suppression of the Priory of St Peter at Ipswich.
In 1609 the manor was purchased by Sir Edward Coke, Chief Justice of England.
