House, now headquarters of Eastern Electricity. 1792 foundation stone, on site of
earlier house. Later alterations and substantial additions to rear and right. For
Sir Robert Harland, Baronet. Grey brick with ashlar dressings. Welsh slate roof.
Two storeys, 7 by 5 bays with service wing to right raised and incorporated into
later additions. Entrance front: seven bays. Later central square porch with
round-arched entrance contains C20 glazed door with jamb lights and fanlight.
Horizontal foundation stone to left of porch bears inscription 'The first stone of
this house laid by Sir Robert Harland Bt. July 29th 1792'. Round-arched recesses
contain 12-pane sashes under flat gauged brick arches surmounted by oculi. To the
right of the porch these have been replaced by large pivoting windows with glazing
bars. 1st floor: Unequal 9-pane sashes under flat gauged brick arches on cill
band. Cornice and blocking course. Hipped roofs around central staircase well
with shallow dome and cupola. East return front: 5 bays, 3 segment-arched
recesses containing replaced tripartite sashes with round-arched niches between on
cill bands. Interior: Entrance hall with coved ceiling and ornamental cornice,
screen of Doric columns in antis to impressive staircase hall. Imperial staircase
which returns in two flights with iron balustrade. Galleries with paired cast
iron Ionic columns with imitation marble finish. Shallow dome with central
oculus. Plasterwork ornamentations. Balcony room to 1st floor is circular on plan
with shallow domed ceiling and segmental wall recesses.
